Beautiful earthy plate featuring a unique design.
One edge of the plate is covered with a glaze made from the ash of apple tree bark, while the rest is left unglazed, showcasing the "Yakishime" technique.
Each plate hass with its own unique pattern (See pictures).

Tsugaru Kanayama Pottery creates pieces with a unique deep texture by firing slowly and carefully at a high temperature of 1350℃.

With regular use, the colour and texture will develop over time, and it will become increasingly smooth and pleasant to the touch.

Tsugaru Kanayama Pottery

Tsugaru Kanayama Pottery is based in Aomori Prefecture, where rich natural clay abounds. Influenced by Sueki (Sue ware), an ancient unglazed pottery from the Kofun to Heian eras, they’ve beautifully revived this technique in the region. Known for its unique deep texture and earthy beauty, their pottery is carefully fired in a wood-fired kiln at a high temperature of 1350°C.

-Characteristics of Tsugaru Kanayama Pottery-
[Sangiri]
The vessels are buried beneath ash allowing fire and air flow on the surface of the vessels and do not get fired directly. Also sometimes the gray and blue colours appear when fired. The condition occurs because of less oxygen.

[Hidasuki]
Straws are placed between pieces to separate each vessels in a kiln. This technique leaves some marks of red straw after firing.

These techniques bring out the original unique texture of the vessels.
Most of Tsugaru Kanayama Pottery are created without glaze. The way Hidasuki and Sangiri appear on each vessel is different. It may have a more worn-out texture than the pictures show.
