Tamba Ware

Tamba Ware is one of Japan's six oldest kilns, with its origins tracing back to the end of the Heian period (around 1185). Originating in the Tamba region of Hyogo Prefecture, this renowned tradition has always focused on crafting functional, everyday tools. Many Tamba kilns follow a complete handmade process, from soil preparation to firing. The distinctive character of Tamba ceramics is created through the "ash cover" technique, where the ash from pine wood fuses with the glaze, giving the vessels a unique and profound expression.
