Hand-thrown by Kisenyou, this lightweight Japanese ceramic mug has a deep charcoal-brown clay body crossed with softly flowing pale glaze. Fine throwing lines remain visible across the surface, while the glaze moves freely around the form in soft cream, earthy brown and muted pinkish tones. The rounded handle and gently irregular shape give it a warm, handmade feel without losing its simple everyday practicality.

I first came across Kisenyou at the ceramic market in Toki a few years ago and brought a small selection of their work back to Australia. Those pieces sold quite quickly, so I was very happy to find them again when I returned to the same market, and even more surprised that they remembered me! I brought another small collection home this time, with plans to hopefully make Kisenyou a more regular part of Senju Living.

Kisenyou is based in Otsu, Shiga. Their pieces are formed individually on the wheel using their own naturally derived glaze blends, with traditional techniques.
