Tamba Ware

Tamba Ware is recognised as one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, with origins dating back to the late Heian period (around 1185). Traditionally made for everyday use, Tamba pottery is known for its practical forms and earthy character. Many kilns continue the full handmade process - from preparing the clay to firing in anagama or noborigama wood-fired kilns. During firing, pine ash naturally settles and melts into the surface, creating the signature natural ash glaze (haiyū) that gives each piece its unique and expressive appearance.

Shoyo Gama

Shoyo Gama is a long-established kiln that carries forward the tradition of Tamba Tachikui ware. Today, the second and third generation owners, together with their families, continue to share the charm and character of Tamba ware. While rooted in the region’s historic craft, they create forms that feel at home in modern life, adding their own sensibilities to the tradition.

Care for Kintsugi Pieces
Due to the delicate nature of Kintsugi repairs, it’s important to handle your piece with extra care. The gold or silver-filled cracks are part of the piece's unique character, but they can be more fragile than the original ceramic. To preserve the beauty of your Kintsugi item:

  Gently hand wash with a soft cloth and mild detergent.

  Store in a safe place away from heavy impact or direct pressure.
