In the historic post-town of Odawara, nestled at the foot of the old Hakone pass, artisans have crafted this simple, enduring tray style for centuries. Originally used in travellers’ inns during the Edo period, the design has remained largely unchanged—valued for its practicality, durability, and understated beauty. With its low, open shape, this tray is incredibly versatile. It suits any dining setting, and the lacquer finish allows you to place food directly on it, making it practical to use as both a tray and a plate.

The tray is crafted from zelkova (keyaki), a timber cherished in Japan for its warm reddish-gold tones and distinctive grain. Traditionally used for bowls, trays, and shrine architecture, zelkova is known for its strong, expressive growth rings that give each piece a natural depth and character.

It is finished with fuki-urushi, a traditional lacquer method that enhances the grain and provides excellent durability. The colour gradually mellows with use, developing a natural patina over time.

Based in the wooded hills of Odawara, Sonobe Sangyo is a long-standing workshop known for its thoughtful approach to Japanese woodcraft. From carefully drying each piece of timber to hand-carving with tools they make themselves, their work reflects a deep respect for both material and craft.

Using traditional Japanese woods such as zelkova, cherry and maple, they create tableware that feels warm, natural and effortless in everyday use. Every piece carries the quiet character of the wood and the care of the hands that shaped it.

Care

After washing, gently clean with mild detergent and a soft sponge.
Rinse well and place upside down in a dish rack or on the sink to dry.
Avoid soaking or leaving the piece submerged in water for long periods.
Not suitable for microwave, oven, induction, open flame, dishwasher or dryer use.
Keep away from direct sunlight, strong air-conditioning, heaters or other heat-emitting appliances.
Do not sterilise by boiling or expose to very hot water.
If you notice a natural wood scent when first opened, simply remove it from the box and leave it in a well-ventilated space for a few days.
With everyday use and proper care, the wood will develop a richer tone and beautiful character over time.
