In the historic post-town of Odawara, nestled at the foot of the old Hakone pass, artisans have crafted this simple, enduring tray style for centuries. Originally used in travellers’ inns during the Edo period, the design has remained largely unchanged—valued for its practicality, durability, and understated beauty. With its low, open shape, this tray is incredibly versatile. It suits any dining setting, and the lacquer finish allows you to place food directly on it, making it practical to use as both a tray and a plate.

The tray is crafted from zelkova (keyaki), a timber cherished in Japan for its warm reddish-gold tones and distinctive grain. Traditionally used for bowls, trays, and shrine architecture, zelkova is known for its strong, expressive growth rings that give each piece a natural depth and character.

It is finished with fuki-urushi, a traditional lacquer method that enhances the grain and provides excellent durability. The colour gradually mellows with use, developing a natural patina over time.

Woodcraft from Odawara

Nestled in the gentle climate of Odawara in Kanagawa, Sonobe Sangyo draws inspiration from the region’s rich natural surroundings. From the moment solid logs arrive to the final hand-polishing, every step is carried out in-house with care. Their approach honours the full life of the material — using wood thoughtfully, minimising waste, and returning off-cuts to new purpose.

Crafted for Everyday Beauty

Sonobe Sangyo’s work brings warmth and purpose to the table. They shape Japanese woods such as cherry, beech, walnut and maple into pieces that feel natural in the hand and effortless in everyday use.

Each item is crafted with care - from rough cutting to lathe turning, long drying periods, and hand-applied finishes that protect the form while letting the grain shine. The result is a beautiful wooden piece you’ll reach for often, growing in character with every use.
