Amano Kouya is a traditional indigo dye workshop founded in 1870 and still run by the fifth generation of the Amano family. Based in Hirose, Shimane, they continue age-old indigo dyeing techniques to create deep, natural colour in cotton, hemp and silk — from dyed yarns to everyday cloth goods and accessories. Each piece reflects over 150 years of craftsmanship rooted in Japan’s indigo tradition.

What is Tenugui?

A tenugui is a traditional Japanese hand towel made of cotton that has been beloved in Japanese households for centuries. Its history dates back to the Nara period (710–784 AD), and it has evolved and remained a staple item in daily life ever since. As it is used, a tenugui becomes softer over time, making it increasingly comfortable to use. Tenugui is used for various purposes in Japanese culture, including wiping one’s face or hands, or as a tool for cooking and cleaning. They are considered indispensable in Japanese daily life, cherished for both their practicality and aesthetic appeal, and continue to be treasured by many people today.

Tenugui Care Guide

The edges are raw cut, so some fraying may occur at first; this will settle naturally with use.
Each piece has been washed once during the dyeing process. We recommend washing separately for the first few washes before washing with other items.
Hand washing with water is usually sufficient.
Please avoid detergents containing fluorescent agents or bleach, prolonged soaking, direct sunlight, or high-temperature ironing, as these may cause fading or discolouration.
Take care when rubbing against light-coloured clothing, as indigo dye may transfer, especially when new.
As each tenugui is hand-dyed, colours and patterns may vary slightly, reflecting the handmade process.
