Celebrate gratitude and timeless Japanese craft with this beautifully hand-dyed tenugui from Amano Kouya, where over 150 years of indigo dyeing tradition meets everyday use.

Versatile and practical, it can be used as a hand towel, head wrap, napkin, gift wrap, or as a simple decorative cloth around the home. With regular use and washing, the cotton softens over time, becoming more comfortable and more beautiful the longer you live with it. Hand-crafted using natural indigo dye, each piece develops a deep, living colour and subtle character unique to the handmade process.

The name “ありがとう” (arigatou / thank you) is more than just a phrase — it’s a gentle reminder of gratitude woven into the cloth. Dyed in rich indigo tones using techniques passed down through generations, no two pieces are exactly alike.

Perfect as a thoughtful gift or an everyday companion, this tenugui brings a quiet sense of Japanese tradition and appreciation into daily life.

Indigo for Everyday Life

Amano Kouya is an indigo dye studio founded in 1870, specialising in thread dyeing. Now led by fifth-generation maker Amano Hisashi, the workshop produces indigo-dyed threads, tenugui, and everyday indigo goods that quietly fit into daily life.

Each piece reflects generations of knowledge, where indigo is used not to stand out, but to bring depth, calm, and lasting beauty to the everyday.

A Tradition Passed Through Generations

Based in Yasugi, once home to the Hirose kasuri tradition, Amano Kouya continues traditional dyeing methods using cotton, linen, and silk. Using a distinctive indigo fermentation technique with pure indigo, the workshop preserves time-honoured craftsmanship for everyday pieces designed to be used, lived with, and appreciated over time.
