Introducing Hirali's Tenugui: a fusion of functionality and elegance.

It's slightly thicker than regular Tenugui, offering excellent absorbency that quickly soaks up moisture. Its quick-drying feature also helps maintain cleanliness, which makes it a practical choice. Plus, it can be used as a kitchen towel, tablecloth, or even as a headband, adding to its incredible versatility.

Using a unique technique, both sides are dyed in deep black.
With a monochrome palette of black and white, a sophisticated and modern piece was created. It's longer than the typical Tenugui, allowing it to be used as a scarf.

Hirali is an exclusive brand created by Takeno Senko in Osaka, a city where the traditional Japanese Wazarashi industry has thrived since the Edo period. Founded in Sakai City, Osaka in 1961, Takeno Senko specialises in double-sided dyeing using our unique roll printing technique. This method, utilising dyes, is the only one of its kind in Japan and can only be achieved at our factory.

What is Tenugui?

A tenugui is a traditional Japanese hand towel made of cotton that has been beloved in Japanese households for centuries. Its history dates back to the Nara period (710-784 AD), and it has evolved and remained a staple item in daily life ever since. As it is used, a tenugui becomes softer over time, making it increasingly comfortable to use. Tenugui is used for various purposes in Japanese culture, including wiping one's face or hands, or as a tool for cooking and cleaning. They are considered indispensable in Japanese daily life, cherished for both their practicality and aesthetic appeal, and continue to be treasured by many people today.

"Kasane no Irome" Motif

Black was popular as a chic colour during the Edo period and has been cherished in Japan since ancient times. It is often used for kimono sleeves and other garments. Additionally, featuring the beloved pinwheel motif, cherished as both a toy and a family emblem since ancient times.

It refers to the traditional Japanese concept of colour layering.

In Japan, the rich seasonal changes create beautiful landscapes and nurture people's aesthetic sensibilities, leading them to incorporate nature's colours into their clothing.

Hirali reinterprets this Japanese colour culture, creating Tenugui that express seasonal hues with integrated designs, adding colour to daily life.
